Getting ready for possible remote learning
While we are hoping to spend the entire year learning in the classroom, there is a possibility that COVID-19 will bring more changes to the instructional model during the year (remote learning or hybrid model like we saw in June). There will also be a lot more student absences this year, as students are asked to stay home if they display any sign of illness. To prepare for the eventuality of remote learning and to support students in staying up to date with the class learning if they have to miss school, I will create a virtual classroom on Teams (Office 365). Students will practice using Teams in class and for homework right away to become familiar with this platform.
What is Teams and how does it work?
The Division 2 Team is a virtual classroom platform where students can take part in classroom discussions, collaborate in small groups, access classroom materials (lessons, handouts, assignments), submit assignments and view feedback. Students will also be able to ask me questions from home regarding concepts or assignments by sending me personal messages.
Here is a little video guide that gives a quick tour of how to log in and how it works. For more information on how Office 365 Team works as a virtual classroom, please see this parent guide.
I have chosen to use this platform as a virtual classroom because it offered by our District and meets all the privacy requirements. Many students have already used Teams for remote learning during the school closures last year. When students move on to higher grades within our school district, they will continue to use Office 365 for many projects. By using Teams right away this year, students will have an opportunity to develop their technological skills and practice digital citizenship alongside their academic learning.
To practice using Teams, I will assign small in-class and homework assignments weekly starting in September. Students will practice accessing assignments and resources, creating documents, participating in group work and handing in work online to prepare for the possibility of remote learning down the road.
Channels for each subject will be created within the main Team to post documents, activities and other useful resources connected to our in-class learning. Students who miss instruction because of illness will be able to use Teams to learn at home or to continue collaborating with their teammates on projects when possible.
