Dear Division 3 parents,
I hope you all had a fantastic Spring Break! I am looking forward to hearing all about it tomorrow!
I have published a separate post regarding the learning activities and projects that we have been up to since January, as I had sent a few email updates but wanted to update the blog with more information and pictures. Below are current messages and information for Division 3 families regarding masks, inside shoes, year-end field trips, and Young Entrepreneurs.

Masks no longer mandatory
Masks are no longer mandated in BC schools, starting tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing many smiling faces in class! Students who want to keep wearing a mask are of course welcome to continue doing so. We will focus on being kind and respectful towards everyone, whether they choose to wear a mask or not.
Clean inside shoes required
Before the break, I noticed that the floor in the class was getting very dirty. The field at this time of the year gets extremely muddy in places, and many students weren't changing their shoes after playing outside, saying that their inside shoes didn't fit anymore, or that they didn't have any. Please check with your child that they have a pair of clean shoes that fits them at school, in addition to the pair of shoes or boots that they wear outside. Thank you!
End of Year Field Trips
Grade 7 parents have already received some information regarding the Grade 7 trip to Strathcona Park that will take place from June 13 to 16. If you haven't yet returned the green form (or replied to Grant by email), please return it on tomorrow to let us know if your child will be participating. More detailed permission and liability forms will come home soon regarding this field trip.
Grade 6 students will go on a year-end field trip to Camp Thunderbird from June 8 to 10 (two nights). More information regarding this field trip (including details regarding the cost of the trip) will come home this week in your child's agenda.

Young Entrepreneurs
Grade 6 and 7 students at ECH are participating in the Young Entrepreneur program this year. We started to discuss this project a little bit before Spring Break so students could start to brainstorm some ideas for a product/business during the break. The school has set the date for the Young Entrepreneur market to May 5, just before Mother's Day, so that students could shop/sell products for Mother's Day presents if they wish to do so. That gives us almost 6 weeks to work on this project.
Throughout this project, students will learn about entrepreneurship, marketing and budgeting, which is part of the Applied Design, Skills and Technologies (ADST) curriculum in Grade 6 and 7. They will keep the majority of their profits and be encouraged to donate a small percentage to a charity/non-profit organization of their choice.

While we will work on developing our business plan in the classroom, some of the work in this project will have to be done at home and parental support/supervision might be required, depending on the project. If you want to know more about how you can support your child in this project, the PowerPlay Young Entrepreneur website has a page for parents as well as a free online course/video series providing practical tips for parents of participants in the program.
Please note that the Young Entrepreneur program doesn't allow students to sell homemade food items (such as baked goods, jam, chocolate, etc). However, selling fruit/veggies/flower starts for the garden would be fine. I encourage students to think of creative ways to up-cycle/recycle any material that is already available at home in order to reduce the cost of materials and the environmental impact of their business. Students can also invest their own money (or borrow money from family members) in order to buy the materials required for their product.
Students will receive a booklet early this week to help plan the development of their business. This week, you can support your child in brainstorming and selecting an innovative idea for their project that connects to their interests/skills.
