Dear Division 2 families,

Here is a short update with highlights from this week:
Math & Art : Angles, Circles and Mandalas
In math, we have been learning to measure and trace angles. We also started to work on circles. Students practiced using a compass and ruler to trace circles that have specific radius or diameter. Today, they worked hard at dividing circles in equal parts, linking with division, fractions and percentage. We also began to study circle graphs in connection with the elections.
We are using these concepts to develop mandalas that we will use for our Art Cards next week.

English and Social Studies: Government and Elections
With the upcoming elections in BC and in the USA, it is a great time to talk about government and politics. We learned how the electoral system works in BC. We also began to discuss the political spectrum and how the political parties represent various opinions and perspectives on important issues.
To do this, we are doing an activity where students take a stance on a given statement, share their reasons, listen to others' perspectives, and rethink their original position as they hear other people's ideas. It is really fun to see how engaged students are in these discussions. This activity really helps them realize that our position on a given issue is influenced by our values.

French
In French this week, we continued to study the song Cosmo and discussed the themes of inclusion and diversity. We also continued to learn about grammar. Today, we looked at the song Merci (Stéphane Legar). This song is about the importance of gratitude and its positive impact on wellbeing. Students reflected in their journals about the things they are grateful for.
Personal Awareness and Positive Personal and Cultural Identity
Most students have completed their Inner and Outer Self-Portraits and they are now beginning to reflect on their core values. We began a value sort activity today and we will follow up next week with a reflection on how our values influence our choices.
Coming up
Next week, we will continue to work on the topic of elections by comparing various political platforms. We will also learn how to be informed citizens. We will look at the coverage of the BC and US political campaigns in the media, focusing on fact vs. opinion, credibility and bias. We will also spend a lot of time working on our Mandala Art Cards.
Have a great long weekend everyone. Happy Thanksgiving!
Sincerely,
Nathalie
