Dear Division 2 families,

We covered a lot ground this week! Here are a few things we have been working on:

Social Studies and Classroom Community

Our personal artefacts activity on Tuesday was a fun way to introduce the concept of artefacts and to start thinking about what objects can tell us (and what they can't tell us!). Students looked at 3 objects selected by an anonymous classmate, looking for clues as to what that classmate's interests and favorite activities might be. They then tried to guess who that person was. We learned a lot about each others through this activity!

French & Digital Citizenship

We started to discuss our digital lives this week and we will continue this conversation in the upcoming weeks.

We began by studying the song Mon Précieux by Soprano. Listen to the song with your child and ask them to explain to you some of the lyrics and why, they think, the author chose to call his phone "Mon Précieux" ! What poetic device does Soprano use in this song?
(Answer: personification).
To help us get a better understanding of some of the issues related to digital citizenship in the context of youth, internet and social media, we are planning to host a special guest, Jesse Miller of Mediated Reality, towards the end of next week.  Jesse is a parent from our school community and has been presenting on this topic in schools all over the country. That will be a fascinating conversation!

Math

In math today, we collected our classroom data for the Terry Fox Run and made some calculations, reviewing mental math strategies, double-digit multiplication, long division, and measurement concepts. We also reviewed data analysis concepts (average, mode, median) using our classroom data.

This week, students also used Prodigy in class. Prodigy is an educational math game that is aligned with the BC curriculum and also adapts to each child's level. When joining my class on Prodigy, students begin with a placement test that assesses their current knowledge of grade level concepts. As a teacher, it gives me detailed data on how each child is doing with specific areas of the math curriculum and helps me identify priorities for teaching.

Once the placement test is complete, I can program Prodigy to focus on certain concepts that we are studying in class. Students can play the game to get extra practice at home for homework study, or if they have to stay home when sick. They can also use it for math enrichment opportunities when they are done their work in class. If your child struggles with math, this is a fun way to get extra practice at home at any point throughout the year.

Health and Physical Education

In the gym this week, we performed a basic personal fitness assessment. Students performed a series of quick tests to measure various elements of fitness: balance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. Next week, students will be encouraged to identify areas of strengths and areas that they wish to improve during the first term. They will identify a personal goal in one or two areas and develop a plan to work towards their goal.

We've also been using our song Le Coach to warm-up for physical activity! Great participation and enthusiasm everyone!!!

Terry Fox Run

Today, our class ran a total of 68 km in 12 minutes today in support of the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. Great effort everyone!

In preparation for the run, we listened to Terry Fox: La perseverance by Gregg LeRock, and read some information about Terry Fox. We reflected on why Terry Fox is a "hero", what makes someone a hero. Students also wrote about their own personal "hero" or inspirational person. We discussed qualities such as courage and perseverance.

Science & Mapping: Nature Journal

This year, we will practice Nature Journaling to practice the scientific skills of observation, detailed note-taking, asking questions, making connections and data collection & analysis. We began today with a fun activity called Secret Plant Scavenger Hunt. Students found a plant, drew it in detail, added descriptive words, and drew a map of where it was situated. They traded journals with a partner and tried to find each other's plant! Great scientific observations everyone!
